The updated Global Wind Organisation training standards are now being delivered by Outreach Rescue. Here is what has changed and what you should check before arranging training.

Although much of the change takes place behind the scenes, several updates may affect the course you need, the time you should allow and whether you are eligible for refresher training.
GWO introduced the updated standards on 10 March 2026. The transition period for the outgoing versions ends on 10 September 2026. Outreach Rescue has already updated its course materials and delivery to reflect the new requirements.
The Changes at a Glance
- Completing both GWO Advanced Rescue Training Refresher modules now takes two days rather than three.
- Completing both initial ART modules at Outreach Rescue remains a three-day programme.
- ART refresher training no longer renews Working at Height or Manual Handling records.
- A valid corresponding WINDA record is required for any refresher module.
- Outreach Rescue’s four-module Basic Safety Training programme is 32 hours over four days.
- Sea Survival is not included within those four days. Where required, it adds another eight-hour training day.
GWO Advanced Rescue Training V6
The updated GWO Advanced Rescue Training Standard V6 covers two main areas:
- ART-H: Hub, Spinner and Inside Blade Rescue
- ART-N: Nacelle, Tower and Basement Rescue
At Outreach Rescue, the initial ART-H module is delivered over one day and ART-N over two days. Delegates completing both initial modules should therefore allow three days.
The refresher route is now shorter:
- ART-HR: one day
- ART-NR: one day
- Both refresher modules: two days
Single Rescuer training is now integrated into the relevant initial and refresher modules rather than being delivered as a separate course. This does not require an additional booking at Outreach Rescue.
ART records remain valid for 24 months and must be renewed before they expire.
ART Refresher No Longer Renews Other Records
Completing ART refresher training no longer renews your GWO Working at Height or Manual Handling records.
These modules must be monitored and renewed separately. Check the expiry date of each record in WINDA rather than assuming that completing ART refresher will extend them all.
GWO Basic Safety Training V20
Outreach Rescue’s four-module GWO Basic Safety Training programme runs for 32 hours over four days and includes:
- First Aid
- Manual Handling
- Fire Awareness
- Working at Height
Sea Survival is a separate, additional module. If it is required for your role, allow one more day of training at Cardiff International White Water.
The two available routes are therefore:
- Four modules without Sea Survival: 32 hours over four days
- Five modules including Sea Survival: 40 hours over five days
The updated GWO Basic Safety Training Standard V20 also includes revised Working at Height guidance and dedicated awareness of motion-compensated Walk-to-Work gangways within Sea Survival. Outreach Rescue has incorporated the relevant changes into its lesson plans and practical delivery.
Check WINDA Before Booking a Refresher
To attend any GWO refresher module, you must hold a valid WINDA record for the corresponding module.
If that record has expired, you will need to complete the applicable initial module instead. Checking your records before arranging dates can prevent an unexpected change to your training plan.
Before booking, employers and delegates should confirm:
- which modules the role and working environment require;
- whether Sea Survival is needed;
- that every corresponding WINDA record remains valid; and
- whether Working at Height or Manual Handling requires separate renewal.
Practical Training at Realistic Height
Course structures may change, but practical familiarisation remains important.
At Outreach Rescue in Raglan, Working at Height and rescue exercises are supported by our 15-metre training tower. It provides a controlled environment in which delegates can use personal protective equipment, evacuation devices and rescue equipment at realistic height under instructor supervision.
