Goal
To assess instructional skills and associated knowledge and understanding required to instruct others in the skillsets of the Water Rescue Technician (Mod 3).

Personnel who have consolidated the learning on the Water Rescue Technician Instructor Training and are ready for assessment OR personnel needing to recertify as a Water Rescue Technician Instructor if approaching expiration of existing award.

Description
This 3-day course is designed for personnel who have completed the Water Rescue Technician Instructor Training within the last 2 years and are ready for assessment or for those needing to recertify as a Water Rescue Technician Instructor.
The Water Rescue Technician Instructor Assessment/Reassessment (Mod 3 Level) is a 3-day course evaluating the competency of individuals functioning as Water Rescue Instructors in Mod 3 skills. It accommodates those who completed Water Rescue Technician Instructor training within 2 years, requiring recertification, or seeking transfer from equivalent awards. The course reviews instructional methods, training design, safety protocols, scenario assessment, and DEFRA FRCO 2025 standards compliance. Delegate demonstrate proficiency in delivering Water Rescue Technician training across classroom and practical sessions, as well as scenario creation to achieve specific learning outcomes. Successful candidates can instruct Water Rescue Technicians and provide CPD training in Mod 3 skill sets. This course ensures instructors maintain current best practices, facilitating skilful instruction and adherence to safety standards in water rescue operations.

Previous knowledge
Completed the Water Rescue Technician Instructor Training within the last 2 years AND holding an in-date Mod 3 compliant award OR hold an in-date Water Rescue Technician Instructors award AND have recorded CPD meeting DEFRA FRCO 2025 requirements (maintain CPD to Mod 3 standard, deliver 2 complete initial Mod 3 courses over 3 years). All delegates must also hold an a First Aid Award which includes Oxygen use (FREC 3 or equivalent)
Requirements
Age 18+. Delegates must be fit for this physically demanding course requiring the ability to demonstrate all Water Rescue Technician (Mod 3) skillsets with a high degree of competence, as well as deliver a training session in these elements.
Progression
Recertification is recommended every 2 years by means of re-attending this course. Completion of this assessment and attendance of the prior training at Outreach Rescue satisfies Module ‘Specialist Rescue Instructor (5087EXQ)’ for the Diploma in Specialist Rescue and is worth 50 credits.
Theoretical elements
- Classroom sessions briefly recap on training planning and delivery, the role of instructors, reviewing and assessing, risk assessing, lesson planning, teaching models and legislative considerations.
- Delegates will also need to deliver a classroom-based training session.
- Delegate must produce rescue plans, risk assessments and lesson plans, which are assessed.
- A written exam paper confirms learning.
- A course manual is issued.
Practical elements
- Practical sessions involve delegates delivering training sessions to peers, assessing peers abilities, creating and delivering training scenarios to draw out specific learning outcomes.
- Delegates should be prepared to deliver training for any skillsets within the MOD 3 remit.
- Specialist equipment is provided.
- All practical elements are holistically assessed throughout the course.

Water & Flood Rescue Technician
This comprehensive 5-day course trains emergency services personnel and organizations involved in water rescue responses at the Water and Flood Rescue Technician (DEFRA Mod 3) level. Delegates learn to identify limitations and effectively use water rescue equipment and techniques while operating near, on, and in moving water.
Asset Commander (Formerly Team Commander)
This 2-day course is designed for personnel holding Mod 2, Mod 3, or Mod 4 awards who are required to command an asset in the operational area. The course teaches delegates to command a specialist rescue asset at the operational level.
Water & Flood First Responder Instructor Recertification
This 2-day course is designed for Mod 2 instructors needing to recertify their Water First Responder Instructor award. It assesses delegates' competence in core instructional skills and associated knowledge required to instruct others in MOD 2 skillsets.
Water & Flood Incident Manager (WFIM)
This 4-day course is designed for personnel who are required to advise or command at water and flood incidents at a tactical or operational level. It trains incident commanders to identify, select, develop, and manage appropriate tactical and operational plans in water and flood environments.
